Heating Oil Tank Decommissioning at Lake Oswego Church

Ash Creek was contacted to decommission a 4,200-gallon heating oil tank (HOT) discovered during site preparation for redevelopment of Our Lady of the Lake School.  The tank was located in close proximity to a church, and sat approximately 10 feet below the ground surface.  Decommissioning the tank in place was the preferred approach, compared to excavation, in order to avoid the risk of undermining the church.

Within two days of notification, Ash Creek had completed a geophysical investigation to locate the extents of the tank and a site investigation to determine a release had not occurred.  The tank was subsequently decommissioned in place.

The expansion plans also included work near the on-site school building and parish, where a former HOT and another in-service HOT are present.  Ash Creek was retained to locate the tanks and complete site assessment to determine if any contamination was present.  Contamination was not observed near either tank, which will be decommissioned in Spring 2011 when the construction schedule allows.
